What people appreciate about me
- I’m truly interested in hearing people’s stories, ideas and life experiences.
- I care about people having a good quality of life (not just the people I like).
- I am good at supporting people solve problems in a way that works for them.
- My determination to fight for the underdog.
- I am good at expressing ideas in writing. People find it easy to be themselves around me.
What is important to me
- Justice and equality. I believe everyone deserves to enjoy their life. It upsets me when people are being treated unfairly or others are abusing their power. I’m not some great freedom fighter submitting letters to the UN, but in my daily interactions and in my work, I seek to ensure everyone is getting a fair deal.
- I like to feel confident that what I’m doing in my work aligns with my values. I avoid labels, and I like to understand the purpose of the things I am doing and the underlaying theories behind them. I want people to have choice and their right to self-determination respected.
- My 3 amazing teenage boys who have opened so many doors and life experiences for me. My steady as a rock opposite number husband of 30+ years. My cat, who is my ideal companion – very low maintenance, seeks out the sun, and can still play like a kitten.
- Nature. I dislike gardening, but I love gardens. I like to just sit and watch the night sky, see the sunrise, listen to the dawn chorus. I need to be around trees and I especially love living close to a river you can swim in.
- Art. I’m at the very beginning of my journey creating art. I work with collage, decoupage, and mosaics. I almost always write a poem (or more) that expresses my thinking in the work. I’m a big Frida Kahlo fan. Her story and her art ignites in me a strong desire to create and love extremely. I think she is a true Goddess.
- Stories, myths, thinking about spirituality. I believe there’s a bigger picture and I love that I am so small within it I have no clue what it is. I think all healing starts with people realizing that their life is a narrative and they to a certain extent can create at least some chapters.
- I want to master the art of speaking of others with openness and possibility. This is a Buddhist precept, but also a Christian philosophy of your words having power. Probably other spiritualities too. I think there are many things in our culture that create a shadow-self for everyone, and it would be naïve to ignore this. However, I think when we say a person is this or that we are holding them in a frame that may be limiting both them and us.
How best to support me at work
- Make me laugh! I like to see the bigger picture and how things fit with strategic direction.
- Conversations help me process, but I also need time to reflect. I’m probably not going to read long documents.
- I hate time-bound projects and need to do these with a Team.
- I express myself quite freely, but that does not always mean I will say everything I’m thinking. If you have an issue, you need to take some responsibility for bringing it up.
